Twenty-Four

The sun was shining in a blue sky with a dusting of cotton ball clouds. There was a slight breeze, and it was a perfect 75 degrees. Exactly like every day since I’d arrived. I was sitting near the koi pond absorbing the beauty of the yard and waiting for Olivia to arrive for our hike. I was watching fish of all colors swim among the lily pads and go in-and-out under the small waterfall and bridge. Back home koi ponds need to be covered with screening to keep the birds and raccoons from eating the fish – but apparently in Destiny Falls the creatures aren’t permitted to do that. Or so I imagined.

I was able to catch up on quite a bit of work yesterday, plus I emailed Luna, Nana and Granana updates on my trip. I included a few more imaginary leads for stories plus a couple more pictures of Denmark. They ate up every tidbit I sent, traveling with me by proxy. By the time this trip was over I’d be able to work for the Denmark tourism department.

It wasn’t long before I saw Olivia and her dog walking up the long drive. I was captivated by Hercules. He looked more like a wolf than a dog to my eyes. He had a large wolf-like head, a stocky build and long legs – he had to weigh almost as much as I did. He had a gorgeous coat of various shades of grey with white around his muzzle and neck. He walked proudly beside Olivia, and I noticed he had no leash or collar.

I stood up and walked their way. I waved, and Olivia waved back. She was an absolute kick. She had on a crisp, coordinated hiking outfit, including a sun hat and a state-of-the-art hiking backpack with water bottles on two sides. Trekking poles were attached by Velcro tabs on the side. And she was wearing brand new hiking boots.

I must have misunderstood her. I thought she said she was a regular hiker, but she looked like she’d been recently let loose in an REI sporting goods warehouse sale. Well, that’s okay, we’d just take it slow today. I’d still get to see the trails that I’d been so looking forward to.

As we left the property and made our way toward Twin Falls Park we chatted amiably. She pointed to homes along the way and shared interesting or funny tidbits about the people who lived there. It was obvious she kept tabs on the neighborhood.

The trailhead was clearly signed. I noticed that it veered off in two different directions and there was a small map stand. I took a quick picture of it on my phone and placed a pin on my current location. No sense in getting lost. Though I suspected that Hercules would guide us back no matter what.

The early part of the trail was wide and flat and covered in packed wood chips. We strolled side-by-side. Hercules wasn’t like most dogs I was accustomed to seeing on the trail – wandering all over and smelling every plant and leaf.
